5715-1954, writing to a chasid, the Rebbe advised that on Shabbat and holidays, chasidic men should not only spend the afternoon at a farbrengen in the local synagogue, as they must also celebrate these special days at home, together with their families. “There is enough time in the day to farbreng properly and also to rejoice with your wife and children.”

5750-1989, Elyakim Rubinstein, Israel’s cabinet secretary, visited the Rebbe three days before a round of high-stakes talks between Prime Minister Shamir and US President George H. W. Bush. The Rebbe impressed upon Rubinstein that Shamir must strongly oppose any concessions that threaten Israel’s existence. This was the only approach that had made an impression upon US leaders in the past, the Rebbe explained, because “the US was founded on an unwillingness to concede on matters that are vital to its existence. Even when England and France and the entire world opposed them, the Americans held onto this policy — and it has worked for them to this day.”
