In preparation for the battle against Midyan, Hashem commanded Moshe Rabbeinu: “Arm from among you men for the army.” Why did Hashem use such strange wording?
The Alshich explains: Most militaries are armed with swords, spears, and other types of weapons—all of which are external to the person using them. Another type of armament comes from within the person. These are Torah and mitzvos, which protect and bring victory. Hashem commanded Moshe: Arm from among you, take the weaponry that you have internally, and this will ensure victory.
Baruch Hashem, this week there were several military successes in Eretz Yisroel. Also this week, Eretz Yisroel received some of the harshest threats in recent history.
Is it by chance that these should happen in the sedra when we read the above command?
It’s tempting to get lost in the sensationalism of a great military. But let’s remember that the true secret to our success is Hashem. By arming ourselves and our fellow Yidden with more Torah and mitzvos, we have a direct impact on the safety and security of Eretz Yisroel. And by helping our dear soldiers do mitzvos—put on tefillin, give tzedakah, wear tzitzis, daven, and learn Torah, we’re providing them with the ultimate protection.

Being armed from without shouldn’t give us a false sense of protection, and being threatened from without shouldn’t give us a false sense of dread. We have it within ourselves to connect with Hashem and overcome any and all obstacles.
May Hashem protect us all and bring true and everlasting peace in Eretz Yisroel, with Moshiach right away.
