Here is my question. I was reading Shaar HaBitachon in Chovos Halvavos, who says that a person who is waiting for a Yeshua and has Bitachon in Hashem, yet he does not keep all the Mitzvos, is a fool. Every time I read this, I become weakened. As hard as we try, we all make mistakes and do Aveiros. Does that mean we have no right to have Bitachon?? Rabbi Mandel always says that even a Rasha can have Bitachon! Can you please clarify this? It is bothering me terribly.
Answer: I don’t even read those words in Chovos Halvavos. At all. When I get to it, I skip it. And even the Chovos Halvavos himself says otherwise. You can have Bitachon even if you are a fool, even if you are a Rasha, it makes no difference. It’s two separate issues; one has nothing to do with the other. Aderaba! The main Yesod of Bitachon is that even a Rasha can have Bitachon. It’s Chazal! And the Rishonim, Rabeinu Yonah, Ramban, the Chofetz Chaim; they all say that even a Rasha can have Bitachon. Don’t look at that Chovos Halvavos. Even if you’ll reach the level that you can digest his words, it’s not worth it. It’s not worth the whole thing. There are loads of Sifrei Mussar, and not everything is for everybody. Each person needs to learn the Mussar that’s good for him. THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. Finished. There’s plenty, plenty, plenty Mussar to learn; NOT THIS.
