Every Yid Must Have a Dovid HaMelech

In all the pesukim of the Torah, there’s a simple understanding, and there’s a deeper peshat. Megillas Eichah is no different; the real, deeper meaning of Yerushalayim that we lament is the one right within our hearts.

The same can be found in Shemoneh Esrei, in which we invoke Yerushalayim in a separate berachah, despite the fact that we have already asked for the redemption—because we’re not asking for the rebuilding of the physical city of Yerushalayim, but rather for the kedushah of Yerushalayim to permeate our hearts. And in that berachah for Yerushalayim, we also invoke Dovid HaMelech—because every Yerushalayim needs a Dovid HaMelech within it... the simplicity and the vulnerability and truthfulness and the bittul with which he approached the Ribbono shel Olam.
