22. There are many types of frozen berries available in stores with the words “Only for blending” printed on the packaging. The intent is that they may not be eaten as is; they must first be blended to allow them to be eaten, so that even if there are insects, they are botul b’shishim after the blending.

23. Only with a high-level hechsher. It should be noted that even with these, one must make sure they have a high-level hechsher. One cannot claim that since he is blending them anyway, perhaps he can rely on a weak hechsher. This is because if the hechsher is weak, they likely did not do enough to ensure the produce is assumed to be free of infestation. Accordingly, it is likely they are still assumed to be infested, in which case blending them does not help.

24. Non-Jewish factory. Similarly, some buy frozen berries from non-Jewish factories [in chutz l’Aretz, where there is no problem of terumos and maasros] without any hechsher, claiming that they will blend it anyway. This is also wrong. If nothing or little was done to minimize the chance of infestation, they are assumed to be infested, in which case blending does not help, as one may not nullify issur l’chatchila.
