At the end of Parshas Matos two and a half tribes came to Moshe with a special request. They were the tribes of Reuvein, Gad and half of Menashe. They requested to settle where they were in Ever Hayarden and not in Eretz Yisrael.

Moshe was very upset at them. He was worried that this move would discourage yet again, Klal Yisrael from wanting to go to Eretz Yisrael. The tribes replied that they would set up living accommodations for their families and cattle and then join Klal Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael to fight and conquer the land. Furthermore, they undertook to stay in Eretz Yisrael until the land was divided out and only then go back to their families and homes.

The Passuk tells us that Moshe agreed to their commitment and repeated over all their conditions. The question is why did Moshe repeat everything over again? Why didn't he just say that if they keep to their word and fulfill their commitment he agrees to their proposal?

The answer is that if we look at the Passuk there is a major difference between how the tribes spoke and how Moshe spoke. They said, "we will go at the front of the battles, and we will stay until the land is conquered and divided out." Moshe said it differently. "If you go to war for Hashem, and stay until Hashem has given the land to Klal Yisrael, then you can have your settlement before Hashem."

Moshe Rabbeinu taught them an important message. It's not about us doing things, it's Hashem. In fact Hashem did great miracles to help Klal Yisrael conquer the land. Stones fell from heaven, dangerous wasps stung the enemies. In reality Hashem doesn't even need them. They just have to come to support their fellow Shevatim and no one should think they stayed behind because they were too scared.

The generation that survived the Meraglim, they had seen the miracles of plagues in Mitzrayim, Kriyas Yam Suf, Matan Torah, the Mann, the battle of Amalek and so much more. Even so Moshe had to remind them that they shouldn't imagine it is them fighting or doing anything else. It is Hashem.

So too in our daily lives we have to remember that everything we are doing or planning to do is only with the help of Hashem. And therefore it is so important to mention that whatever we are doing 'Beezras Hashem' or 'Im Yirtzeh Hashem'. We can't do anything without the help of Hashem.

There is a Midrash that brings the following story. A wealthy man once went to the market to buy cows. On the way Eliyahu Hanavi, disguised as a businessman asked him, "where are you going?" He replied, "to buy some cows." Eliyahu said, "say Im Yirtze Hashem (if Hashem wants)." "Why," asked the man? "I have the money in my pocket and I will buy whether Hashem wants or doesn't want."

On his way his money fell out his pocket. Eliyahu Hanavi picked it up and put it in a safe spot. The man came to the market, chose his cows, but when he stuck his hand into his pocket there was nothing there. The man had no choice but to leave the cows behind and went home very disappointed.

He took more money and went again to the market. On the way Eliyahu Hanavi, disguised as an old man asked him where he is going? The man replied that he is going to the market to buy cows. "Say Im Yirtze Hashem," said Eliyahu. But the man never listened.

On his way, the man lay down to have a rest. Eliyahu Hanavi took the money from his pocket and hid it next to the first money. When the man awoke and saw his money was gone he went back home very disappointed. He realized that it wasn't a coincidence. So the third time he went he met Eliyahu Hanavi disguised as a poor man. Eliyahu asked him where he is going? He replied, "to buy cows Im Yirtze Hashem." Eliyahu Hanavi blessed him with success.

He bought some cows at the market. On the way home they ran away into the forest. The man ran after them. They stopped by a large stone. When he caught up with them he saw his first two sets of money were there. Eliyahu Hanavi had been sent in disguise to teach the man not to take the credit for himself but to realize that everything one does one needs Hashem's help to succeed.
