The topic of tzipisa liyeshuah [anticipating the redemption] is not just a timely topic, it’s one that fits into this week’s parsha as well. The Rambam in Hilchos Melochim (Perek 11) cites a number of sources which obligate us to await the coming of Moshiach. One of the sources he brings is from the pasukim which discuss the laws of Oray Miklot [the cities of refuge]. In this week’s parsha (Ma’asei) Moshe is instructed to tell Klal Yisroel to build a total of six Oray Miklot. In Parshas Shoftim (Devorim 19:8-9) it says: “When Hashem will expand your borders ... you must add three more cities.”
The Rambam (Hilchos Melochim 11:2) writes: This command was never fulfilled. No command is given in vain. In the future, there will be a total of nine cities of refuge – an additional three above those separated by Moshe and Yehoshua. Obviously, since this never occurred, it is referring to the times of the Moshaich when it will be fulfilled.
This is one of the many sources cited by the Rambam, for many more, see the Rambam inside.
