Classic Concepts מטות–מסעי
The Alter Rebbe says, “A person is obligated to remove from himself all filth and junk before he begins to daven.” This means that before a person can truly stand before Hashem in prayer, he must first free himself from any negative traits or distractions. Only then can he approach davening with the proper mindset and purity.
There are four stages in this preparation, each one building upon the previous. Even after completing one stage, a person must recognize that it is still not enough; there is always more to be done. The process of refinement is ongoing, and each new level brings with it new challenges and opportunities for growth.
This idea is illustrated by the difference between a ladder positioned on the ground and one that is constantly being elevated. In our spiritual lives, we must always be climbing, always seeking to reach higher levels of connection with Hashem. Without this constant movement, we risk becoming stagnant and losing the momentum necessary for true growth.
