The Forty-Two Journeys

HaShem commanded the Jews to only 42 marches in the forty years in the desert (Rashi Bemidbar 33:1). And of these 14 marches (from Ramses to Rismah) were during the first year and half prior to the punishment. From there the spies were sent, as it is written, “After the people set our from Nazeroth”, “Send men to spy”. And from here we read, “They set out from Hazeros and encamped at Rismah.” From this we learn that Rismah is in the wilderness of Paran.

Further, we also find that the 8 marches which followed Aaron’s death, from Mount Hor to the steppes of Moab, were in the 40th year.

Questions

  1. Throughout the 38 years (from the sin of the spies in Av of the year 2449 until the death of Aharon on the first of Av 2487), how many marches actually occurred?
  2. During these 38 years, the Jews stayed in which place for 19 of those years?
  3. If you count the journeys in the Chumash, from Rismah (place of the spies) until reaching Mount Har (place of the death of Aharon), the number of journeys is one less than the number from question #1. How does Rashi account for the missing journey? (Hint: see Rashi in Perek 26)
