The pasuk in Mishlei (12:18) says: “There are those who speak like the jab of a sword and the words of righteous heal.” Rav Bunim of Peshischa zy”a explains that the pasuk is asking why words are so powerful that they can literally harm like a sword. The answer is that “the words of the righteous heal”. Hashem wanted to grant tzadikim the incredible power to heal people and save them with their words. Therefore, He placed much strength in words. Accordingly, the opposite is also true. Since words are so powerful, when used improperly they can wound like a sword.
