A Heter Meah Rabbanim for Lashon Hara

Rav Naftali Amsterdam zt”l (one of the formost students of Rav Yisroel Salanter zt”l) was very careful with his speech. When he would see people transgressing the prohibition of lashon hara, he would say, “I can’t understand it. When people want to marry a second wife, which is only a cherem from Rabenu Gershom, they go to the trouble of obtaining a heter meah rabbanim. Why don’t they get a heter meah rabbanim to speak lashon hara, which is a severe issur d’ohraysa?”
