Man’s Best Friend

Menucha Magazine | December 31, 2025

Dogs have many qualities that vary by breed. Over time, dogs have proven to be much more than just man’s best friend: they are used for work, hunting or gathering and for health benefits to humans. Assuming it’s in good health, the average lifespan is about 12 years, though many factors can influence how long a dog will live, including the size of the dog.

What you may not know about dogs are the many unique abilities that the Creator has bestowed upon them. Research indicates the companionship of a dog can enhance human physical health and psychological wellbeing. As for hearing, the frequency range for a dog is 40 Hz - 60,000 Hz, which means that dogs can detect sounds at four times the distance that humans can hear at. This is primarily due to their ear mobility. This means they can tilt, rotate, raise, or lower their ears.

Lastly, for their sense of smell, most dogs have 125 - 220 million smell-sensitive receptors. A Bloodhound (a specific breed) has 300 million receptors. This means that dogs have 100 million times greater ability to smell than we do. So while most dogs have poor vision, ranging from color blindness to only being able to see red or green colors, they more than make up for this by having a great sense of hearing and smell.
