Pathways to the Soul
Illuminating teachings and insights on the weekly Parsha of Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel Zt”l
From the weekly lessons of his son Rabbi Yisrael Abargel Shlita
Miketz | Master of Self, Master of Nature
In this week’s Parsha, we learn about Yosef’s rise to power in Egypt. After interpreting Pharaoh’s dreams, Yosef is appointed as the viceroy, second only to Pharaoh himself. This remarkable ascent is not merely a tale of political success, but a profound lesson in self-mastery and spiritual greatness.
The Power of Self-Control
Yosef’s journey is marked by extraordinary challenges. Sold by his brothers, thrown into a pit, and later imprisoned on false charges, Yosef never loses his faith or composure. The Torah describes him as “Ish Matzliach” – a successful man – not because of his external circumstances, but because of his unwavering inner strength.
Our Sages teach that true mastery over the world begins with mastery over oneself. Yosef’s ability to resist the temptations of Potiphar’s wife, to maintain his dignity in the face of humiliation, and to forgive his brothers, all stem from his deep connection to Hashem and his disciplined character.
Nature Bends to the Righteous
The Zohar explains that when a person achieves self-mastery, even the forces of nature become subservient to him. Yosef’s wisdom and integrity not only earn him the trust of Pharaoh but also enable him to save Egypt and the surrounding nations from famine. His spiritual stature elevates him above the natural order, allowing him to influence events on a grand scale.
Lessons for Our Lives
Each of us faces our own tests and tribulations. The story of Yosef reminds us that our true power lies within. By cultivating self-control, faith, and humility, we can overcome adversity and become instruments of blessing for others. Just as Yosef transformed his suffering into salvation for countless people, so too can we turn our challenges into opportunities for growth and kindness.
May we merit to follow in the footsteps of Yosef HaTzaddik, mastering ourselves and, through that, bringing light and sustenance to the world.
