The Cohen Gadol Type of Simcha To Fargin and Rejoice in The Good Fortune of Others

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

The only pure oil was: בְ חוֹתָ מוֹ שֶ ל כֹ הֵ ן גָ דוֹל sealed with the signet of the Cohen Gadol. Also, the hero of the Chanukah story was Matisyahu Cohen Gadol, who started the revolt. Twice, the Cohen Gadol is the hero of the Chanukah story. The first Cohen Gadol (Ahron HaCohen) became Cohen Gadol by being a: לֵב שֶשָמַח בִגְדוּלַת אָחִיו heart that rejoiced with his brother’s greatness. Both Sukkos and Chanukah are in the Zechus of Ahron. Sukkos is a Zecher (to remember) the Ananei HaKavod, which were in the Zechus of Ahron, and Chanukah was in the Zechus of Ahron. The Rambam says that the days of Chanukah are: יְ מֵ י הַ לֵ ל וְּ שִ מְּ חָ ה days of praising Hashem and Simcha. In Hilchos Lulav, the Rambam elaborates about the importance of Simcha on Sukkos, Z’man Simchaseinu.

If a person is happy with his OWN Hatzlacha, this happiness can be marred when you lose your Hatzlacha. So, it’s not the real Simcha. And it isn’t pure Simcha, since it has a major Negi'a, i.e.: זִ יךְ ME! There is a bad Midda in all Simcha; except when you’re a Cohen Gadol type of Sameach, i.e., a: לֵב שֶשָמַח בְ מַ עֲ לַ ת אַ חֵ רִ ים heart that rejoices in OTHERS’ good fortune. You have a relaxed Fargining Simcha, which is available all your life with whoever you meet (and you can be Sameach about your own Simcha as well).

True “Seeing” Is to See Good in Others

A Yom Tov of “lighting” allows you to see, and true “seeing” is to see good in others, i.e., to be Dan L'kaf Zechus and to Fargin. We rebuild the Bais Hamikdash with the Koach of the Cohen Gadol, since he is the opposite of jealousy and Sin’as Chinam, which causes Churban and: הֶ רֶ ס destruction. The reason why Ahron was buried on: הֹר הָהָר Hor HaHar (a “double” mountain) was because an Ayin Tova person has two mountains in his life. He is happy with his own accomplishments in Avodas Hashem, and with other people’s gains; thereby getting the Schar of both (a “double” mountain).

The Yevonim destroyed Gadlus HaAdam by going undressed during Olympics. They also forced our doors to remain open, destroying privacy (and: תִ יבָ עֵ ל לְ הֶ גְ מוֹן תְ חִ לָ ה כתובות ג ב). The Maharal says that: המָ הֵ בְ (an animal) means: ה מַ הּבָ it has what it has, but it doesn’t grow or Shteig like an “Adam” which means: אַ דָ מָ ה the ground, which makes things grow. On Chanukah we renewed the Mizbeach, which has a: כֶ בֶ ש ramp, which symbolizes moving upwards and growing.

We Add Light Each Day of Chanukah, for Us to See and Realize How Much We Really Have

The Menorah also has a process of growth, since each night we light another candle until we hit 8. Only a light tells a person what he already has, and the more light, the more he realizes how much he really has. We grow in being an Ahron type and a Sameach B'chelko. Such a person Fargins, since he doesn’t go around worried and jealous.

Ideally, we should spend a long time each day of Chanukah thanking and realizing how much we have. And every day to add and to add; and watch Yeshuos coming to your life! The Cohen Gadol wears: אַבְנֵי מִלּוּאִים Avnei Milu'im, and is inaugurated during: שִבְעַת יְ מֵ י הַ מִלּוּאִים the seven days of Milu'im. He is a full person, and we need to always work on trying to be like Yaakov Avinu who said: יֶש לִי כֹל וישלח לג יא I have EVERYTHING.

He has a horrific life from Eisav and Lavan, and instead of complaining, he says: קָטֹנְתִי מִכֹל הַחֲסָדִ ים וישלח לב יא I am humbled from all of Hashem’s Chesed, and: הַזֶה וְעַתָה הָיִיתִי לִשְנֵי מַחֲנוֹת look how my family has grown to two camps! He could have complained, why did Hashem cause him to have to divide his family in fear that Halevai once camp survives. Instead, all he sees is the positive side, that he has two camps!

Thanking For Past Hatzlachos Is a Segula for More Shteiging

Of course a person needs to Shteig in the plain sense, and add on in Avodas Hashem. However, thanking for past Hatzlachos is a Segula for more Shteiging. But one must be careful not to jump so easily. When you’re in the 4th day of Chanukah, don’t get carried away wishing it would be the 8th day. Enjoy the 4th day to the fullest!

And the same with all your Avodas Hashem. You may be involved in bad habits, like Ka'as, and Ta'avos, etc. Just keep trying to improve without letting up, and despite the fact that you’re still in the “mud”, be happy with your present Madrega, and be happy that you’re not worse, and that you are even a DROP better than you used to be.

TRUE STORY

A Yungerman in BMG was lacking a 1st Seder chavrusa, and he also needed a night Seder chavrusa. He davened hard for a month and nothing happened. For a week he stopped davening and he spent an average time of 20 minutes just thanking for his good past in learning and his 2nd Seder chavrusa, etc. Right away, he got two top, top chavrusas!
