Generally, these four aspects of the lamp are condensed into two aspects. First, drawing down from above to below and second elevating from below to above. This explains that which is written in the Haftorah that is recited on Shabbos Channukah: “and I will permit you to proceed among these who are standing.” The verb ‘proceed’ is stated here using the plural, and as is explained in several places, this refers to [the concept of] two kinds of procession: 1 going from above to below (this is called Hamshocho) and 2 going from below to above (this is called Ha’alo’oh).
And this was the spirit of the miracle of Chanukah—the miracle of the cruse of oil with its connection to the kindling of the lamps. In other words, in order that there be perfection in the kindling of the light with all of its [constituent] aspects, and [in consequence] for this reason, it was instituted that Hallel and the special thanksgiving prayer of Al Hanissim be recited.
This, because these two things—praise and thanks—parallel the two [aforementioned] systems of drawing down and elevating. The word ‘Hallel’ -praise- comes from the word in the Possuk “Behiloi Neiro” - Hashem lit His candle over my head—which is an expression of light being illuminated and drawn down from above to below into a place of darkness. And the word ‘Hodo’oh’ which also means to submit embodies the concept of self-nullification. Thus, from a position starting below, there is the concomitant elevation from below to above.
