I Do Not Know How to Read or Write and Its Fruit Is Sweet

ליקוטי שמואל | June 27, 2025

A very amazing story of Providence took place in the case of a God-fearing Jew who lived in Morocco a few decades ago, and one day decided to immigrate to the Land of Israel. The problem was that the Jew did not know how to read or write at all, and did not even know the shape of the letters, and when some of his friends heard about his intention to immigrate to the Land of Israel, they mocked him and warned him: "In the Land of Israel, the people are educated and intelligent, how can you imagine that you can get a job there?!" In his distress, the naïve Jew decided to go and consult with his teacher and rabbi – the holy Gaon Rabbeinu Meir Abuhatzira zt"l, and do whatever he instructed him to do. Rabbi Meir listened to his doubts and said: "Go to the Holy Land, and remove fear from your heart! Does the Holy One, blessed be He, provide for them from the horns of rams to the eggs of lice, and do they know how to read and write?! Nevertheless, the Holy One, blessed be He, provides for them, and why are you afraid that the Creator will not provide for you as well?" When Rabbi Meir noticed that the Jew was still in a state of worry and apprehension, he said to him: "Know that if the Creator wills, precisely because you do not know how to read and write, you will have a livelihood..."

The Jew decided to obey the voice of the tzaddik, and immigrated to Israel, and as soon as he arrived, he kissed the land of Israel. After acclimatizing to Israel a little, he rented an apartment and went to the Labor Office to look for a job. He waited in line for a long time, and when he looked around, and saw in front of his eyes people younger than him, educated and educated, he was filled with embarrassment and frustration, "What employer would prefer me to these successful young people..." When it was finally his turn, the Jew said to the clerk: "I have just immigrated to Israel and I am looking for a job" – and because of the pressure and confusion, he suddenly "blurted out" – "but I do not know how to read and write"... The clerk wrote everything down in front of him, and from what we know, he was so disappointed that he didn't know why I had to tell him about my problem... But he came to his senses and strengthened himself with faith in God and in the faith of the Sages, that God would not abandon us, but would take care of his livelihood.

The next morning, a phone call is received at the Jew's home from the Ministry of Defense. "You are invited to a job interview with us, and we ask that you come as soon as possible." The Jew arrived at the scene, and they asked him to sit in the waiting room, until they turned to him. The Jew sits and waits for a long time, watching the many people coming in and out, but to his surprise, no one invites him in. Three hours of nerve-wracking waiting have passed, and the man almost decides to return home. Suddenly, they called him and asked him to enter the office. The clerk who was sitting there questioned him a little, and mainly focused on his lack of literacy. The Jew told the truth, "When I was younger, I didn't go to school. Afterwards, when I grew up, I couldn't absorb reading and writing." And here, the clerk stands up and informs him: "You have been hired, you will be employed by a company for the development of weapons... Your job will be – shredding piles of documents..." The Jew wondered, how did the miracle happen?! But later, when he began to work in the company's ranks, he already understood what was behind his employment; the company had a great deal of paperwork, of the most secret documents, which had to be shredded on a daily basis. But here the company's managers encountered a problem – who would handle the shredding of the documents; the company's employees are engineers and experts in the manufacture of weapons, and it is not appropriate to waste their time shredding papers. And to bring in just an outside worker, they were very afraid that he would read the secret security documents. One of the managers suggested looking for a person who could not read and write, and he would deal with shredding the documents. At first, it sounded strange to the other members of the management as to where such a Jew could be found, but nevertheless they turned to the Labor Bureau, and asked that if a person who could not read and write came to them, they should be informed immediately. It turned around from heaven that after the request came from the Ministry of Defense, our acquaintance would come to the Labor Bureau, and he would 'eject' someone who could not read or write... And here they informed the Ministry of Defense that a worker had been found for them, and they invited him for an interview. Now it turned out that waiting outside for three hours was for the purpose of an "exam" – to find out if he really could not read. The man was seated in the waiting room, surrounded by interesting newspapers and books. The hidden camera took a picture of him, and the clerk sitting inside watched him through the screen for three hours straight, to see if he would glance at the newspaper. At some point, after a long time of boredom, he really took the newspaper into his hands. But he opened it laterally... After passing the test, he was immediately hired.

It was an easy and orderly job, with excellent economic conditions that his "scholarly" friends did not dream of... And the story is not over yet. After enjoying a decent salary for years, with a profit and not a reduction, the Jew decided to retire and receive the high pension he deserves. It wasn't long before a courier arrived on behalf of the company in which he was employed. "Listen, turn to him, we were sure that we would find another employee in your place, but we couldn't find another one like you... We will ask that you return to work." The Jew apologized and said that he preferred to remain a pensioner. At this point, the emissary told him: "Go back to work, and we will make sure that you continue to receive a pension, and that you will also receive a salary from the company..." The Jew concluded his wonderful story by saying: "I was privileged to see with my senses how the words of my teacher and Rebbe, Rabbi Abuhatzira z"a, are fulfilled, that precisely because of the lack of knowledge of reading and writing, I will be hired for a job; and who knows if I would have known how to read, if I had been privileged to find such a job..."
