Nice Doggy

Parsha Pages Youth | June 27, 2025

If Mr. Petlover's dog, sheep, cow, or any other tame, domestic animal, injures Mr. Hertz, he must pay Mr. Hertz an amount equal to half the damage the animal caused. But if this animal continues injuring people, Beit Din warns him to take extra care in guarding his animal. If the animal still continues to cause damage, it no longer has the status of a tame animal and Mr. Petlover must pay for the entire damage.

On the other hand, if Mr. Petlover owns a wild, dangerous animal -- like a lion, or a bear, or a snake -- and that animal hurts someone, then he must pay full damages even the first time. After all, even if he says he trained the animal not to hurt anyone, it's still a wild animal! Something was bound to happen sometime, wouldn't you agree?
