Our Sages Z ́ ́L teach us that G-d guides and teaches Israel to fulfill His mitzvot and He also fulfills them, as the verse says: “His laws and judgments to Israel”, His laws and judgments, G-d also commands the Children of Israel. In Parashah Mishpatim the mitzvah “If you would lend money to My people” appears, the mitzvah of lending money to the poor. How does G-d fulfill it? And what can we learn from this for our daily service to God?
What is a loan? A man who needs money asks for a sum from his friend, on the condition that he pays it back in full after a time. The Torah commands every Jew to lend, even to one who is poor and has no particular virtue, should be lent the amount he asks for. Also the Holy One, blessed is He fulfills this mitzvah. He lends spiritual strength to every Jew. Every day, every moment, every hour. G-d not only gives this only to one who has virtues, someone very high, but to every Jew. We must remember that these forces were not given to us as a gift, but as a loan. How can the Jew repay this loan to G-d? Carrying out the order of G-d to observe His laws and His judgments and use the forces that were given to us to fulfill the will of G-d.
Following the commandment "if you lend money", the Torah orders "do not pressure him" the creditor is forbidden to pressure and distress the debtor to repay the loan. If he does not return it, because he has no money, it is forbidden even to face him so that he will not be embarrassed. Also this mitzvah fulfills G-d with the Children of Israel. He does not pressure or distress his children to repay the loan, but he behaves with kindness and mercy in a close and visible way.
The Torah was given to Israel so that it can join to G-d and sanctify itself on its ways. “He spoke His words to Yaakov, His laws to Israel”. G-d commanded us to fulfill his mitzvot, so that through him we connect with his essence, his holiness, and his exaltation. Every mitzvah that a Jew fulfills becomes a strong, firm and incomparable bond, which illuminates the whole world with a light that comes from the heavens, creating a true connection with G-d. Every union like this influences and illuminates also the environment of the Jew and hastens and brings closer the arrival of our righteous Mashiach, soon in our days.
