Tzaddik: Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev (1740-1810). AKA Kedushas Levi or the Berdichever.
Tzaddik of Berditchev said: As quoted in a Sicha Simchas Torah 5723 (Toras Menachem 35 pp 139) and the Frierdiker Rebbe’s Igros Kodesh (V6pp420): “There is a known saying from Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev that he complained to HaShem and stated: “If You would have established Gan Eden and Gehinom in a manner which could be seen with meaty eyes and all the desires and pleasures of this world You would have written in books ... this would have been a straight and easy route to serve HaShem blessed be He; but now that the order is the opposite ... the Avodah is very difficult!
Hashem is demanding from B’nei Yisroel, whilst He hides ‘Gan Eden’ in a book yet flaunts all the world’s desires in front of their eyes”?
Their eyes: Understandably that if the situation was reversed and people would be able to see the Garden of Eden with their eyes, but all the worlds desires were written inside a book, most certainly we would all choose the good over evil.
It: The whole concealment of Hashem is not a real existence, it has just been designed that way in order to arouse a meaningful Avodah.
Holiness: And its purpose is not to conceal but to avail a choice.
Cloud: And not smoke.
Earthly: Which seemingly would mean that it has not been correctly elevated, and its refinement is not complete.
