Tiferes Yehonasan – 23:19,20
“לא תבשל גדי בחלב אמו. הנה אנכי שולח מלאך לפניך לשמרך בדרך, ולהביאך אל המקום אשר הכנותי” – “You shall not cook a tender young animal in its mother’s milk. Behold! I send an angel before you to protect you on the way, and to bring you to the place that I have prepared.” The Torah places, “לא תבשל גדי בחלב אמו” next to “הנה אנכי שולח מלאך” – what is the connection between the two? The Malachim saw Klal Yisroel as their nemesis, for they were jealous of Klal Yisroel for coming to take the Torah that they wanted to keep, as the Gemara in Shabbos 88b says that the Malachim told Hakodosh Boruch Hu, “מה אנוש כי תזכרנו ובן אדם תפקדנו, תנה הודך על השמים”. Hakodosh Boruch Hu answers the Malachim, “Didn’t you eat meat and milk when you were by Avrohom?” The Malachim then stopped arguing, and were no longer jealous of Klal Yisroel. This was what the Torah says, “לא תבשל גדי בחלב אמו”, that one is not allowed to eat milk and meat together, and because the Malachim did, they accepted that Klal Yisroel received the Torah, and thus, “הנה אנכי שולח מלאך” – then the Malach was able to escort Klal Yisroel, as the jealousy and hatred for Klal Yisroel were no longer there.
Let’s analyze this. When Malachim are in Shomayim, there is certainly no concept of them keeping the Mitzvos of the Torah; they certainly do not heed the Mitzvos of Tzitzis, Tefillin etc... However, the Malachim thought that perhaps when they are down here in this world, and being part of this world on some level, that they are to have the Torah. Is it that the Malachim are supposed to actually follow the Torah, or is it just to appear that they are, but they don’t really need to? They are Malachim, and they don’t really have any connection to heeding the Torah Hakdoshah. Hakodosh Boruch Hu explained to the Malachim that when they went to Avrohom Avinu, they ate milk and meat together, that which is prohibited for Klal Yisroel. Had they had a real connection to heeding the Torah, then they would have had to heed the rule of not eating milk and meat together. Thus, they in fact are not really connected to the heeding of the Torah Hakdoshah, and thus they were not upset or jealous of Klal Yisroel receiving the Torah.
