As we approach Rosh Hashana, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on its significance and its interplay with Israel and world Jewry.
Rosh Hashana is a time for past introspection and new beginnings, aspiring to do better in the year ahead. It is a time to reconnect and strengthen our Jewish roots and our bond with our family and community, and to pray for all we need including joy, prosperity and peace here in Australia, in Israel and around the world.
Reflecting on Israel and world Jewry events, this past year has undoubtedly been filled with many challenges and triumphs. In Israel we have witnessed many struggles and also great cause for celebration. From the growth of the State of Israel to the pleasing progression in normalizing relations with several Arab countries, to the ongoing conflicts and tensions within Israel and the region, our prayers for peace and unity in all sectors of Israeli society continue to be essential.
Having spent much time in Israel, I always marvel at Israel’s remarkable scientific, technological and cultural advancement and contribution to the world - and at the same time its’ determined resilience in the face of increasing hostility and adversity. With great fortitude, the IDF continues to inspire with its incredible moral compass in the face of a damning world, and we should certainly have these heroes in our prayers this Rosh Hashana.
Beyond Israel’s borders, we have seen the resilience and steadfastness of Jewish communities in Australia and worldwide. We have witnessed unity and strength as our global family works to combat rising antisemitism, protect our heritage and values and advocate for justice and equality. I commend the resilience and determination of Jewish individuals, organizations and leaders who fearlessly continue to foster Jewish identity, education and engagement, ensuring a proud and vibrant prospect for future generations here in Australia and around the world.
As we gather to celebrate Rosh Hashana, may we draw inspiration from the stories of our ancestors both recent and through the ages, who faced seemingly insurmountable challenges with faith and hope. Our collective history is rich with resilience, courage and triumph against all odds.
May this Rosh Hashana be a time for unity - where we support one another and together strive for a better future for all. May Israel continue to flourish as a beacon of light, morality and hope, and may world Jewry thrive in strength, unity and prosperity.
On behalf of my family and Chabad House of Caulfield, I wish all our readers, their loved ones and the entire community a Shana Tovah Umetukah - a very sweet, prosperous and peaceful New Year.
