Why are Aveiros called: הַ שְׁ חָּ תָּ ה destruction? Eisav was called an: אִּיש שָדֶה outdoorsman because he did nothing with his life. And what became the end result of Eisav? All the pain and destruction and persecutions of his descendants, like the Nazis, Y'mach Sh'mam. A person was created to emulate his Creator, and if he doesn’t engage in constructive activity, he will hurt and destroy. גַם מִּתְרַפֶה בִּמְלַאכְתוֹ אָח הוּא לְבַעַל מַשְ חִּית משלי יח ט Being unproductive and lazy is as corrupt as one who actively destroys.
Avraham Avinu loved working, industrious people (Chazal) and he fervently wanted children who are also called “produce”; the fruits of a human (פְרִּ י בִּטְנְךָ) who is called: הָאָדָם עֵץ הַשָדֶה a fruitful tree. The Mashgiach R' Nosson Wachtfogel Zatzal used to always tell people: “You must do”, like having Talmidim and building Yeshivos. Learning is also productivity, especially Chidushei Torah.
The Mesilas Yesharim says: הַכָּבוֹד הֶּבֶּל הַבָּלִּים Kavod has no benefit. Yet, some people aren’t impressed. “So what if I do nothing, and/or look for Kavod or Ta'avos, which have no Tachlis? Did I hurt anybody?” We see that doing zero is indeed a vice (immorality) which leads to the worst cruelty. It is important to work on appreciating being a “doer”, and to learn how to hate uselessness.
People can have a hard time with their Ta'avos and Shmiras Einayim, because they value their whims and brief pleasures. In the Mussar Yeshivos they are learning how to disdain forms of enjoyment that have no Tachlis, which in the end, they give you a bad feeling. When they control themselves, it’s like a major accomplishment and doing a great thing, like Chazal say: יָשַב וְלֹא עָבַר עֲבֵרָה, נוֹתְנִּים לוֹ שָכָר כְעוֹשֶה מִּצְוָה קידושין לט ב One who held himself back from doing an Aveira, is rewarded as if he actively did a Mitzva.
