Rav Yechiel Michel of Zlotshuv - Mayim Rabim (5546 / 1786 - 238th Yahrzeit)

Rabbi Yechiel Michel of Zlotchov (25 Elul 1786), son of Rabbi Yitzchak of Drohovitch, was introduced by his father to the Baal Shem Tov at a young age. He also became a disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch. It is said that his sermons consistently aroused his listeners to repentance. Many of his teachings are collected in Mayim Rabim.

Rav Dovid Halberstam of Chrzanow - Darchei Dovid (5653 / 1893 - 131st Yahrzeit)

He was born in Rudnick in the year, 1818) תקע"ח), but others say תקפ"א. In תרי"א, he was appointed rav in Kshanov (Chrzanow, Poland) and his father arrived at his inauguration to crown him as rav. He exchanged Shu”t (responsa), with his father who described him as “a great luminary-- sharp and a master, a pious chassid.” From the year, תרל"ו, Rav Dovid tried to hide his greatness, but Chassidim flocked to him from far and wide and he had no choice but to accede and serve as their leader.

Rav Yosef Goldman - Av Beis Din of Neupest (5698 / 1938 - 86th Yahrzeit)

The son of Yitzchok and Chaya Goldman. He served as Rav of Neupest for 32 years. He passed away on 25 Elul 1938/5698 תרצ"ח and was laid to rest in Neupest in 1967/5727, and when the local bais hachaim was transferred, he was reinterred in Budapest.

Rav Avraham Horowitz, talmid muvhak of the Steipler Gaon. He learned at Novardok Yeshiva in Tel Aviv, then at Eitz Chaim in Yerushalayim.

Rav Gershon Shaul Yomtov Lipman Heller - Tosfos Yom Tov (5414 / 1654 - 370th Yahrzeit)

Born in Wallerstein, Bavaria in the year 5339 (1579), Rav Yom Tov was orphaned from his father before he was born and raised by his grandfather, Rav Moshe Wallerstein. At age eighteen, in 5357, he was appointed as a dayan and rosh yeshiva in Prague, in the beis din of the Maharal. His fame spread throughout the entire world as a gaon. At age thirty, he authored his magnum opus, the Tosafos Yom Tov on Shas Mishnayos. In MarCheshvan of 5385, he was appointed Av Beis Din of Nikolsberg, Moravia, and on Rosh Chodesh Adar of 5385 to Av Beis Din Vienna. In Teves of 5387 (1627), Rav Heller was appointed Av Beis Din of Prague. The Tosafos Yom Tov passed away on the 6th of Elul (Some say the 26th Elul).

Rav Elyakim Getzil of Ostrog (5584 / 1824 - 200th Yahrzeit)

Rav Getzil, the son of Rav Yaakov Yosef of Ostrog (“Rav Yevi”), was a tzaddik who tried to keep his mitzvos hidden from public view. Although he himself lived in utmost poverty, he donated vast sums to charity. Because of his great acts of tzedaka, he was venerated in Ostrog for many generations. Rav Getzil passed away 26 Elul in the year .תקפ"ד/5584

Rav Chaim Pinto of Mogador (5605 / 1845 - 179th Yahrzeit)

Rabbi Chaim Pinto Hagadol ("the Great")], a descendant of Rabbi Yoshiyahu Pinto--the "Rif" of Ein Yaakov--was born in Agadir, Morocco on the 6th Hilula of Rabbi Chaim Ben Attar. At age 20, he became the head rabbinical judge in Mogador, exercising this function for more than 70 years. The greatest Torah scholars of the generation esteemed him, and Jews and Muslims alike venerated him.

Rabbi Shmuel Abba Zikelinsky of Zichlin [26 Elul 5639] was an important disciple of Rabbi Simcha Bunim of Pshischah, and subsequently a Rebbe in his own right with a large following.

After the year תקעה when the Chozeh, the Kozhnitzer Maggid and the Rymanover passed away Rav Sholom continued to subjugate himself before others and travelled to Rav Uri of Strelisk. Rav Yehuda Eizik Eliezer Hirschowitz - Kerem Beis Yisroel (5631 / 1871 - 153rd Yahrzeit)

Rav Yitzchok Eizik Eliezer Hirschowitz was born in 5631/1871 in Libau (Liepaja), Latvia. His parents were Rav Aryeh and Liba Devora. In 5666/1906, he became Rav of Talsen in Kurland, where he had grown up. He remained until he was forced to flee in World War I, ending up in Minsk. Part of the Radin Yeshiva had also taken refuge in Minsk, and the Chofetz Chaim asked him to teach them. In Lithuania, he headed Yeshiva Ohr Yisrael of Slabodka. Later he moved back to Telshe as principal of Yavneh Teachers’ College for Men. In 5686/1926, he became Rav of Wirballen. On the twenty-seventh of Elul 5701/1941, Rav Yitzchok was taken by the Nazis from the famous Talmud Torah. All sang Adon Olam together as they marched to their deaths.

Rav Chaim Leib was born in 5647/1887 and grew up in Yerushalayim. At the age of eighteen he received semicha from Rav Chaim Berlin of Yerushalayim. Rav Chaim Leib’s thirst for Torah was unquenchable. He opened a Yeshiva for Toras Ho’Ari, which they called Sha’ar HaShomayim. Rav Chaim Leib stood at the helm of the Yeshiva his entire life. Rav Chaim Leib suffered two heart attacks. After the second one, he suffered for some time, and was niftar at the age of sixty-eight on the 28th of Elul 5614/1954.

Rav Aryeh Carmell - Published Michtav M'Eliyohu, Strive for Truth (5766 / 2006 - 18th Yahrzeit)

Rav Aryeh Carmell (1917-2006) was born in England. At the age of 16 Aryeh was sent to study under Rav Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler and became his talmid muvhak. Rav Carmell began to compile Rav Dessler's teachings under his guidance. Following Rav Dessler's petirah he started Yad Eliyahu in London, where children who studied at public schools were taught ahavas Torah and yiras Shomayim. Moving to Eretz Yisrael in 1972, Rav Carmell settled in Yerushalayim's Bayit Vegan neighborhood and helped Rav Boruch Horowitz found Yeshivas Dvar Yerushalayim, Yerushalayim's first yeshiva for baalei teshuvoh.
