If I Will Probably Be Nichshal Again, How Can I Really Have Cha'rata

Question: Every Motzei Shabbos we daven in: אָבִינוּ מַלְכֵּנוּ וכוּ' חַשׂוּכִים מִכָּל חֵטְא וכו' – אַתָּה חוֹנַנְתָּנוּ that we shouldn't do any Chata'im. Similarly, in the Vidui on Yom Kippur we ask Hashem: שֶׁלֹא אֶחֱטָא עוד. I saw in Daas Shlomo from R' Shlomo Wolbe Zatzal (מַאֲמָרֵי יְמֵי רָצוֹן, עמ' תמז) that a person has to believe that he could die without doing any Aveiros! But I find this hard to understand. In our Dor we are so low, how is this possible? For example, having Kavana in davening; is it possible to have Kavana the whole davening every day? And many other things like this. This can also disturb my Cha'rata in general, since I know that I will probably be Nichshal again, so how can I really regret it?

Answer: You are going to worry about Kavana in davening? Why don't you take a look at the Tur who says¹ that you don't go back when you don't have Kavana, because the second time around you won't have Kavana anyway. Five hundred years ago they were having trouble with this Halacha! (And the Gr”a brings² a Yerushalmi that even the holy Amoraim had trouble with Kavana). How's that one? Because they fell! People fall! They are human!

There's a Gemara in Makkos³ where Dovid came and said it's too hard to keep all the Mitzvos properly. You'll have to focus mainly on 11. Then Yeshaya came and cut it down to 6. Then Micha came and cut it down to 3 things, etc., until Chavakuk boiled it down to ONE thing, i.e., just sit like Mandel, who spends a whole day with: צַדִּיק בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ יִחְיֶה i.e., sit there and work on Bitachon and laugh! That's for you! It's a Gemara! Chavakuk HaNavi said that! He lived more than 2500 years ago. Do you know how way back he was? And he already said "You can't, it's too much”.

So sit mainly on Emuna, work on Bitachon, and be happy you're alive! Say thank You Hashem for air, for my wife, my kids, for my father, my mother. Whatever it is. For the fact I'm such a great person like me. That's your Rosh Hashanah. Leave me alone from hard Mitzvos; we keep away from that.

Stop with the Cha'rata. Say once “I'm sorry”, and move on. Don't be one of those who say "Oy, do you really have Cha'rata, etc.?" Do you have a love for suicide? Do you like to destroy yourself? (A lot of people do, by the way). Go to Hamas, they do it all the time. When the Israeli's eliminated a whole bunch of them, their wives and children were dancing! “Look, he gave his life away to kill other people!" What a Tzadik!” Haha! Do you want to be one of those, who enjoys hurting himself?

I just spoke to a captain of a police force; he told me that he deals with people who get so discouraged that they are ready to jump off the roof. Suicide is part of what they deal with. Goyim are always contemplating it; there's always a possibility that life may get too hard, so jump off the roof. This is not our Derech! וָחַי בָּהֶם! We're here for fun! Enjoy! Make yourself a nice Chasidishe Rosh Hashanah, Chasidishe Teshuva, and do Teshuva for not enough chilling out, not enough shmoozing with good friends, not enough good steaks eaten up, and do Mitzvos with a Geshmak! Learn a few easier Gemara's (instead of sitting over the impossible ones). I heard a story about one of the biggest of the big (I don't want to say their names, on the caliber of R' Berel from Brisk) a Gaon who knew Kol HaTorah Kula. They say that one of the greatest of the Lakewood former Talmidim of R' Ahron came over to him with a very hard Baal HaMaor, one of these way hard things, and he told them “What are you learning that for? We learn easy stuff!”

So take out an easy Rambam, learn that, and relax. Make life easy for yourself. Why are you making a difficult world? Don't sit and kill yourself. Some people love self-destruction. What are you doing? Enjoy life! Get yourself a Rebbe, and find ideas of how to chill. Get involved in helping people, visiting etc. Do you know what R' Yisroel Salanter Zatzal did on the way to Kol Nidrei? He took a little baby who was crying (“But you have to go to Kol Nidrei!”) R' Ahron Kotler Zatzal told a bachur who said "I'm going to miss the davening” “Better to take care of someone in the dormitory who is not well”.

I don't know if that's your idea of chilling. But sometimes when you YOURSELF are somewhat sick in the head, because, like the rest of us, you can't tolerate a lot of stress going on, so, take care of THAT sick person. Shmooze around a little longer. And get a good friend who laughs at your silly jokes. And Hashem will have nachas from you. That's the best you can do! לֹא נִיתְּנָהּ תּוֹרָה לְמַלְאֲכֵי הַשָּׁרֵת יומא ל א the Torah was not given to Malachim. You are not a Malach!

Now listen. What I just said now, I'm not saying this for the whole public. There's nothing wrong if the public heard it, but the public may take it too far. I'm not here to be M'vatel the rules. I go along with the rules. But, you have to know that sometimes, it's a bigger Mitzva not to do the rules than to do the rules. They call it the “fifth” Shulchan Aruch. And I've seen it by Gedolei Yisroel. I know a world famous Chasidishe Rebbe, a Posek, who told a friend of mine that he's allowed to do something that you're really not supposed to do (to play music in a time you are not supposed to) "You can do it; you're a depressed guy!” He was Matir him. Let yourself live! וְחַי בָּהֶם And enjoy life! Have a K'siva Va'chasima Tova. You are a great person. Kol Tuv.
