Visiting the Graves of Tzadikim

Parsha Halacha | June 27, 2025

Many have a custom to visit the graves of tzadikkim (righteous men) on Erev Rosh Hashanah. This is in order to pray in a holy place. The prayers uttered in such a place are more readily accepted. In addition, it is customary to ask that the holy souls of the righteous intercede on our behalf in Heaven.

● One should pray to G-d when visiting these holy sites.

● Many authorities permit one to ask the soul of the tzadik to intercede with G-d on their behalf. Certainly, one may not pray to a deceased tzadik and ask for his assistance.

● It is customary not to eat before visiting the graves of tzadikim. But it is fine (and recommended) to drink.

● It is proper for a man to go to the Mikvah on the day he plans to go to a cemetery. (This does not only apply to the gravesites of tzaddikim.)
