A Human Thrives on Being a Giver

Bitachon Weekly | December 31, 2025

The world cannot exist if Gezel and Arayos are rampant. A human being was created to be a “giver”. (R' Chaim of Volozhin). Some Chasidim say that if you’re getting depressed, start doing people favors and you’ll feel better! (P.S. It is a well-known fact that the happiest people in the world are out-of-town-Kollel people who are there to service Jews who lack Ruchaniyus). A human thrives on being a giver, and I heard in the name of R' Nosson Wachtfogel Zatzal that the more you give, the better!

Chag HaSukkos (which reminds us of the Ananei HaKavod) is the Yom Tov of Ahron HaCohen (the Ananei HaKavod were in his Zechus). The question arises, what does: זְמַן שִֹמְחָתֵנוּ the time of our Simcha have to do with Ahron? Actually, he is the only person about whom it says in the Torah that he was happy. And what was he happy with? וְרָאֲךָ וְשָמַח בְּלִבּוֹ (Shemos 4:14) His brother’s greatness; a Chesed-type of Simcha, which is a true and pure Simcha.

The Ideal True Simcha Is When You Give Others

Does Yom Tov actually mean a time for בִּיקוּר חוֹלִים וְנִחוּם אֲבֵלִים visiting the sick and comforting mourners? (And the Rambam actually quotes this). There is a famous Rambam that says that if a person has a good time with his own family on Yom Tov, but he locks his doors to the poor, then it’s not real Simchas Yom Tov.

The Rambam calls it: חַמְשִֹת כְּרֵיסוֹ a Simcha for your stomach! We see clearly that true Simchas Yom Tov is only when you are giving others! (P.S. The Sefer HaChinuch says that the Arba Minim gives you Simcha.) We see that the ideal true Simcha is when you give others.
