Me'oros Hatzaddikim | June 27, 2025

Rav Binyamin married Pessil, the daughter of his father-in-law, Rav Chaim.

He was a gadol b’Torah in both its revealed and hidden facets. He was a disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch and of Rav Yechiel Michel of Zlatshuv. Rav Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev testified, in Ahavas Dodim, that Rav Binyamin was “a holy flame, a G-dly man.”

Rav Binyamin was a gifted darshan (orator); he travelled from place to place saying derashos to help others return to G-d. The Rav of Zalozitz, Rav Eliezer Ish Horowitz, testified: “I personally remember Rav Binyamin; we were close friends and our souls were bound to each other with love. I saw his great humility and his piety and how he was a great darshan, to whom none that have followed him can compare. His words of rebuke and mussar entered deep into the hearts of his audience and were well received, helping them to do teshuvah.”

Although Rav Binyamin never met the Baal Shem Tov, his derashos and divrei Torah were spiced with Kabbalah and chassidus, including quotes in the name of the holy Baal Shem, from the Maggid of Mezritch, Rav Yaakov Yosef of Polnoy, Rav Yechiel Michel of Zlatshuv, Rav Menachem Mendel of Premishlan, Rav Nachman of Kosov, and Rav Yitzchak of Derhobitsh.

His sefarim include; Torei Zahav on the Torah, Eichah and Megillas Esther. Ahavas Dodim on Shir Hashirim and Eichah, Amtachas Binyamin on Koheles, and Chelkas Binyamin on the Haggadah Shel Pesach, including, in the Munkacsz edition, a kuntres with his biography and toldos, entitled Toldos Binyamin. All these works were published posthumously by his son, Rav Asher Zelig the Av Beis Din of Ishovitch. His daughter married a Rav Moshe.

He passed away on the 25th of Tishrei, 1791) תקנב) and was laid to rest in Zalozitz.
