Now, in this sichah, Rebbe Nachman continues on this path by revealing new advice on how to use the power of forgetfulness in a practical way. He shows us how to truly take advantage of our ability to forget the past in order to come closer to Hashem and reach higher levels in serving Him. He encourages us to learn from the example of the Jews after the Sin of the Golden Calf and not allow our previous mistakes to prevent us from doing avodas Hashem right now, as he says: “If there was no forgetfulness, it wouldn’t be possible to do anything in avodas Hashem. If a person remembered all of his sins, he wouldn’t be able to lift himself up to serve [Hashem] in any way.”
However, similar to the Jews in the desert, we have to rely on the power of the tzaddik. Just like the Jews had emunah in Moshe Rabbeinu and truly believed that they could forget about the past and make a new start, so too, we have to strengthen our faith in Rebbe Nachman that we can do the same in our lives, even if we’ve committed very serious transgressions, G-d forbid. No matter what we’ve done, we must trust in Rebbe Nachman’s profound advice and block out our mistakes from our mind. We must simply start over in serving Hashem and following His will, without looking back whatsoever.
