How often is "once in a blue moon"?
The moon goes through eight phases every twenty-nine and a half days, including “waxing” phases (getting bigger) and “waning” phases (getting smaller). Other phases include the new moon, when it is at its smallest, and the full moon, when it is at its largest. Obviously, the moon is always the same size. But as it goes around the earth, different parts of it are lit up by the sun.
The months of the Jewish year are calculated by the full moon. However, the secular months can be twenty-eight to thirty-one days long, unrelated to the moon. Therefore, they can sometimes have two full moons in one month. This happens around once every two and a half years, and is called a “blue moon.”
