Pekudei | Free Choice and Power of Thought

Illuminating teachings and insights on the weekly Parsha of Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel Zt”l. From the weekly lessons of his son Rabbi Yisrael Abargel Shlita.

The Parsha of Pekudei teaches us about the importance of free choice and the immense power of thought. Every action we take, every decision we make, is rooted in our ability to choose. The Torah emphasizes that our thoughts are not just fleeting ideas, but the very foundation of our actions and spiritual growth.

The Power of Thought

Our thoughts have the ability to shape our reality. When we focus on positive, holy thoughts, we draw down blessings and spiritual light into our lives. Conversely, negative or impure thoughts can distance us from Hashem and hinder our spiritual progress. The Sages teach that a person's mind is like a garden; what we plant and nurture will ultimately grow and bear fruit.

Free Choice in Action

Hashem has given each of us the gift of free will. This means that no matter our circumstances, we have the ability to choose good over evil, to pursue holiness over impurity. The Mishkan, described in Parshat Pekudei, was built through the voluntary contributions and efforts of the people. This teaches us that spiritual elevation comes from our own initiative and willingness to serve Hashem.

Guarding Our Thoughts

It is not enough to guard our actions; we must also guard our thoughts. The Yetzer Hara (evil inclination) often tries to plant seeds of doubt, negativity, or temptation in our minds. By being vigilant and redirecting our thoughts towards Torah and mitzvot, we can overcome these challenges and draw closer to Hashem.

Practical Advice

  • Begin each day with positive intentions and thoughts.
  • When negative thoughts arise, replace them with words of Torah or prayer.
  • Surround yourself with people and environments that inspire holiness.
  • Remember that every small effort to guard your thoughts is precious in the eyes of Hashem.

May we merit to sanctify our thoughts and use our free choice to serve Hashem with joy and sincerity.
