How is it appropriate for the students to come and say to their teachers: “the time of Shema has arrived’? A student is meant to be a receiver from their teacher, not the other way around!

One could say that since it involved a matter of Halacha, the students were allowed to interrupt their teachers to remind them to say Shema. However, since the time of reciting Shema was only beginning and was not ending until later, according to Halacha they didn't have to interrupt their teachers as they still had time.

Therefore, the question remains, how could the students interrupt their teachers in the middle of their Seder?

In Shema, we declare the Unity of Hashem. Chassidus explains that there are 2 levels of this Unity.

A higher level of the Unity of Hashem, referred to as יחודא עילאה, is the perspective from Above that the only existence is Hashem alone and that the world is not an independent reality.

The lower level of Unity of Hashem, יחודא תתאה, is the perspective from below that the world does exist as an apparent independent reality, but Hashem is in charge and in control and we surrender ourselves to Him.

These 2 levels of Unity are reflected in the 2 times a day we say the Shema, in the morning and in the evening.

Krias Shema Shel Shacharis (the morning Shema) represents יחודא עילאה, the higher perspective of Hashem’s Unity, because light of the day represents open revelation, which is יחודא עילאה. The light of the sun is a metaphor for the light of Hashem shining openly in the world.

Krias Shema Shel Aravis (the evening Shema), when there is darkness and the sun does not shine, represents the lower Unity of יחודא תתאה.

The teachers are on a higher level, relating to Hashem on the level of יחודא עילאה. The students represent those who are on the lower level of יחודא תתאה. The role of a teacher is to lift their students to their level, where they also can sense the higher level of Unity.

This is what the five Tanaim achieved through their teachings on the Seder night. When the students were coming to tell their teachers that the time of Krias Shema Shel Shacharis has arrived, they were saying that you have accomplished what you needed to do as teachers. You have given us a ray of יחודא עילאה and we have come to the level of Krias Shema Shel Shacharis.
