Why is this night different from all other nights

MAOR CENTRE publications | June 27, 2025

The Frierdike Rebbe taught in the name of his father the Rebbe Rashab, a deeper explanation of the questions of the Mah Nishtana. Night represents Golus. In Mah Nishtana we are explaining how this night – this final Golus, is different to all of the other exiles.

The first question: Dipping represents purging. In all of the previous exiles, we did not even achieve one full purging. But in the final Golus we achieve two purgings: the refining of the body and revelation of the soul.

The second question: Matzah represents the G-dly soul that has Bittul. Chometz represents the Nefesh Habehamis that has Yeshus. In all other exiles, we still have to work on our Nefesh Habehamis as well as our Nefesh Elokis. But after the final exile, there will be “only Matzah” because the spirit of evil will be removed from the world.

The third question: Yerakos (vegetables) comes from the term “green”. The colour green is associated with jealousy. In all other exiles there were many types of jealousy, such as the jealousy between scholars. But after the final Golus, there will be Marror, the most intense jealousy, where each Tzaddik will be “burned” with jealousy on seeing the reward and accomplishment of his friend.

The fourth question: Eating is a metaphor for delight. Sitting represents a more external form of delight. Reclining represents an essential, inner delight. In all other exiles, the G-dly revelation was limited to the level of each person. Some experienced an external delight and some reached the essential delight. But the revelation after the final exile all of the Jewish people will attain the essential delight.
