18. There is a machlokes haposkim whether insect eggs are assur d’oraisa or only d’rabanan (רש''י חולין דף ס''ד ע''ב ד''ה מדרבנן, תוס' שם דף ס''ד ע''א ד''ה שאם ). Most poskim agree they are also assur d’oraisa, just one does not get malkus since they are smaller than the shiur (רש''י שם, רמב''ם פ''ג מאכ''א ה''א, שו''ת כת''ס יו''ד סי' נ'). Similarly, they are botul b’rov and do not have the status of a briyah (above, 10).

19. Do not leave meat uncovered. In the summer, it is common for a certain type of fly [large, green, and buzzing] to lay eggs on meat, fish, or cheese left outside. The eggs are white and kernel-like in appearance, looking like rice. Since this is common, one should be careful not to leave these things out on the counter, as the flies can easily and quickly lay eggs on them. If one finds that eggs were laid on the meat, it should be rinsed well to remove the eggs from it (תשו' קול גדול למהר''ם בן חביב סי' ס''א ).

20. If one sees a regular fly—not the type that lays lots of eggs on meat—flying around the kitchen near food, or even landing on food, one does not need to worry it might have laid eggs.
