Fearlessly Continue and Don’t Be Nis'pael from Your Mistakes

Bitachon Weekly | June 27, 2025

פירוש המלבי"ם לספר שמואל עה"פ

When the Aron HaKodesh was recovered from the Pelishtim (who had captured it) Dovid was extremely happy, and he was dancing and singing with loads of Simcha. The Malbim points out that Dovid had gotten somewhat carried away, and therefore a terrible accident took place. The Aron looked like it was slipping of the cart, and: עֻזָה Uzza tried to catch it. This was considered a big Bizayon, since the Aron can carry itself; and: עֻזָה Uzza died on the spot.

Dovid was very upset and he took the blame. The Malbim says that as a result, Dovid began serving Hashem out of: יִ רְ אַ תהָּעוֹנֶשׁ (fear of punishment), which was a Yerida (fall) from his former Madrega of Avodas Hashem, which always was out of Simcha and Ahava. The Aron was rerouted, and given to Oved Edom HaGitti, who was very respectful to it, and he was Zoche to an abundance of children as a reward. Dovid saw that just as the Aron can cause pain and death, great Brachos can also come as a result of the Aron.

He started dancing and singing all over again and to such an extreme that his wife Michal considered it too much. The Me'am Lo'ez points out how Dovid noticed that Michal was looking down at him, yet he didn’t care and he continued full blast with his Derech of: עִבְדוּ אֶת ה' בְשִמְחָה Serving Hashem with Simcha to the extreme. He didn’t remain traumatized from the incident with: עֻזָה Uzza.

This is so different from so many of us. When we make mistakes and are punished from Shamayim, we can lose our former glory very easily. Being impervious takes a Melech who isn’t Nis'pael from his mistakes, despite their seriousness. And especially being Oved Hashem B'simcha and B’ahavah is something you never give up and you fearlessly continue! A Dovid type, who has a big (Admoni) Yetzer Hara, needs extreme Simcha in Mitzvos, and needs to say: וְהַעֲרֵּב נָא make the Torah Geshmak many times.

Dovid was so B'simcha, that he was M'zalzel in himself when he danced. He insisted in giving more Kavod to Shamayim and putting himself down. This is because he was so crazy in love with Hashem, and he recognized all the goodness going on in his life. This was his line, and he is our model, as we say: וּבְשִׁ ירֵּי דָוִד עַבְדֶךָ נְהַלֶלְךָ תפלת שחרית, ברוך

When we daven and say Tehilim, we should be laughing uncontrollably with the beauty of Dovid HaMelech’s words! For most of us, we need to privately thank Hashem (preferably with a: סֵּדֶר קָ בוּעַ regular set time) for all the great things happening daily to us, both in Ruchaniyus and in Gashmiyus. Nothing stops our never-ending love and Simcha for Hashem. Thanking is our essence (Yehudi means Hoda'ah) and also a ticket to a good Olam HaZeh and Olam HaBah.
