Safek, “doubt,” is the numerical value of Amalek [the Jewish nation’s mortal enemy and the evil force it represents]. We are commanded to eradicate anything that bears a connection to Amalek. Spiritually, this includes the concept of kerirus, “frigity” or “apathy” – for Amalek was the nation who “cools us off” [from enthusiastic and passionate divine service]. Although divine service should be performed in an orderly manner and based on rational concerns, it should also be done with enthusiasm and fervor, leading us to step beyond all limitations, and serving Hashem bechal me’odecha, “with all your might.”
