ויקרא ט,א: וַיְהִי בַיּוֹם הַשְמִינִי קָרָא מֹשֶׁה לְאַהֲרֹן וּלְבָנָיו וּלְזִקְנֵי יִשְרָאֵל

Baal HaTurim: “It was on the eighth day” Moshe said, “Because I resisted for seven days at the Burning Bush, I merited to serve as the (only) Kohen for seven days (of Inauguration).”

Possible understanding: Moshe seems to be saying that he resisted being the emissary of HaShem for seven days, and was punished by being limited to serving as a Kohen for only seven days. But this does not seem logical since it would mean that if Moshe has resisted longer, he would have been Kohen longer.

Perhaps, one should see Moshe’s resistance to being an emissary in a positive light. Moshe was afraid that his speech impediment might lead to a chillul haShem, or that others were more worthy. Thus, Moshe’s refusal was praiseworthy and merited to be a Kohen. However, since he only resisted for seven days, he was only a Kohen for seven days.

Tagin

Moshe told Aharon, ‘Approach the Altar and perform the service...to provide atonement for yourself and for the people.’

Baal HaTurim: The letter ר in the word קרב by tradition has two tagin. This alludes to the following Medrash: when Aharon was told to approach the Altar he became embarrassed. So Moshe told him to approach and bring offerings since Hashem has chosen you.

This text is in accordance with Sefer Tagin which states that this letter ר is one of one hundred and fifty letters in the Torah with two tagin. According to the Ittur Bikkurim, the tagim appear specifically on the letter ר because it is the only letter in the word קרב which is usually written without tagim.

Another version of the Baal HaTurim is that the letter ק in this word receives two tagim. The Ittur Bikkurim suggests the letter ק is the initial letter of קדושה (holiness) that was to be infused into Aharon as he approached the Altar. Raza DeMeir suggests letter ק is the initial letter of קרבן (offering).

When Moshe told Aharon to approach the Altar, Aharon thought how could he who had participated in the Golden Calf, now approach and offer a calf? Therefore, he hesitated until Moshe explained that Hashem had selected him for this purpose. Thus, the two tagim indicate that Moshe had to tell Aharon twice to קרב (approach).

Fire Went Out

ויקרא ט,ז: וַתֵצֵא אֵש מִלִפְנֵי יְהוָֹה וַתֹאכַל אוֹתָם וַיָּמֻתוּ
The Baal HaTurim says that the numerical value of "vatochal" equals that of "Zeh shnei chutin," this is 'two threads.' Sanhedrin 52a says that Nodav and Avihu died through a celestial fire that came in the form of two threads and entered their nostrils. As well, the numerical value of the word "osom" equals that of "zeh ha'nefesh," per one opinion in the above Gemara that the fire destroyed their insides, consuming their souls, but the exterior of their bodies were not burned.
