In a previous issue was cited a statement of the Chazal regarding Gideon, that he found merit in the Jewish people, and immediately Hashem appeared to him etc.
Question:
The quote is from Midrash Tanchuma, but (in the editions presently in print) it says that a malach (angel) appeared to Gideon?
Answer:
The passuk in Shoftim 6:4 (which was given as the source) says clearly that Hashem immediately appeared to Gideon. And Rashi explains: Hakodosh-Boruch-Hu Himself. This also appears clearly in midrash Yalkut Shemoni Shoftim remez 62: I Myself (Hashem) will reveal to Gideon.
