Shemot | Torah Scholars Hold the World’s Keys
In the weekly Parsha of Shemot, we learn about the unique role of Torah scholars in the world. The sages teach that the world stands on three pillars: Torah, Avodah (service), and Gemilut Chasadim (acts of kindness). Among these, Torah is the foundation, and those who dedicate themselves to its study and teaching are considered to hold the keys to the world’s spiritual and material sustenance.
Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel Zt”l emphasized that Torah scholars are not only responsible for their own spiritual growth but also for the wellbeing of the entire community. Their prayers, learning, and guidance serve as a protective shield for the world. The Zohar explains that when Torah is studied with sincerity and devotion, it brings down blessings and mercy from above, ensuring the continuity of creation.
The Power of Torah Study
Torah study is likened to a lamp that illuminates the darkness. Just as a small light can dispel much darkness, so too can the study of Torah dispel confusion and negativity from the world. Rabbi Yisrael Abargel Shlita, following in his father’s footsteps, teaches that every Jew has a share in this light. By supporting Torah scholars and engaging in learning, one becomes a partner in sustaining the world.
It is taught that the merit of Torah study is so great that it can overturn harsh decrees and bring salvation. The Talmud relates stories of sages whose prayers and learning saved entire communities from calamity. This is why communities throughout history have prioritized the establishment of Batei Midrash (houses of study) and the support of those who dedicate their lives to Torah.
Responsibility and Humility
With great power comes great responsibility. Torah scholars are expected to embody humility, kindness, and integrity. Their influence is not measured by wealth or status but by their commitment to truth and their ability to inspire others. Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel Zt”l would often remind his students that the true measure of a scholar is his willingness to serve others and to use his knowledge for the benefit of all.
In conclusion, the Parsha of Shemot reminds us of the vital role that Torah and its scholars play in the world. By valuing and supporting Torah study, we ensure the continued flow of blessing and protection for ourselves and for all of creation.
