Depression and Discussion

Rebbe Responsa | June 27, 2025

Blessing for Shidduch; Dispelling Depression; Avoiding Debate

By the Grace of G-d
15th of Teves, 5727
Brooklyn, N. Y.

... 54th St
Brooklyn, N.Y., 11219
Blessing and Greeting:

Your letter of November 22nd reached me with some delay. I also received your previous correspondence.

May G-d grant the fulfillment of your heart’s desires for good in your personal life, particularly in regard to a suitable Shidduch.

As for your writing about feeling upset, and how to avoid becoming depressed, surely you know that one of the basic foundations of our religion and way of life is that. G-d’s benevolent Providence extends to each and everyone individually. And since G-d is the Essence of Goodness and it is in the nature of the Good to do good, this should give a sense of real security and confidence, as King David said in the sacred Psalms, ”G-d is with me, I shall not fear,” "G-d is my shepherd, I shall not be short of anything,” etc. You should frequently and deeply think about this, which will help you dispel any feeling of depression and the like.

With regard to the discussions which you mention in your letter, you ought to try as much as possible to avoid getting involved in any kind of discussion or debate. It should be sufficient to point out one’s world outlook, without attempting to enter into a debate either to defend it or to try to convince the others to accept it. For in most cases of such discussions, the opponent who is not really interested in the truth, will rarely, if ever, admit that he is in the wrong, and the results may be quite the opposite of what one hoped to accomplish, not to mention the aggravation, etc.

Hoping to hear good news from you,
With blessing,
