Hashem, Slow to Anger, Abundant in Kindness, Forgiver of Iniquity and Willful Sin

The Hebrew word פקד, used here to mean "visiting," can also be translated in the sense of "lessening" (as in ולא נפקד ממנו איש( )Bamidbor 31:49). The verse then could be construed to read: "Lessening the iniquity of the fathers for the sake of the children"; i.e. if the fathers have good children, their iniquity will be forgiven for the sake of their children's merits.
