The Hebrew word פקד, used here to mean "visiting," can also be translated in the sense of "lessening" (as in ולא נפקד ממנו איש( )Bamidbor 31:49). The verse then could be construed to read: “Lessening the iniquity of the fathers for the sake of the children"; i.e. if the fathers have good children, their iniquity will be forgiven for the sake of their children's merits.
