The Twenty-Eight Times and the End of Days

Torah Papers | June 27, 2025

I want to say one more thing, but for this, I need you to take out your calculators. Unless there are accountants here who know calculations by heart. Chas v’shalom, I’m not calculating the end of days – I’m not part of the revelation department, and that’s not my branch. I simply daven three times a day, asking Calculating ends is not what I do. But, when you see something written in black and white, as Rabbi Karlenstein showed me, I received tremendous inspiration and was myself inspired. And something that inspired me – I want to share with you, as it says, do not withhold goods from its owners. Rabbotai, let’s see a most beautiful thing – please take out a calculator.

In Sefer Kohelet, Shlomo HaMelech, the wisest of all men, tells us there are twenty-eight times.

To everything, there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heavens. I saw this idea in Lev Eliyahu by Rav Elyah Lopian, in an essay (Beshalach) called “The Power of Faith Above Nature.” He writes it is well known what the Vilna Gaon said. Listen to what the Vilna Gaon said.

How many times does Shlomo HaMelech list? Twenty-eight. A time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot what was planted, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to break down and a time to build up, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to seek and a time to lose, a time to keep and a time to cast away, a time to tear and a time to sew, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

The Vilna Gaon says, there are twenty-eight times from the beginning of Creation until its end. Six thousand years is the world, divided into twenty-eight times. On your computers or calculators, divide 6000 by 28 and you will get 214.285. That’s what I got on my calculator. Did you get the same? Great, bravo. It comes out that each “time” is 214.

The Vilna Gaon writes that the time he lives in is the time of war. This was the case when he lived – 250 years ago. Now, if each time is 214 years, how much do we have left until the end at 6000 years? 27 times have already passed, and 1 time remains. Which time? עֵת שָׁלוֹם – A time for peace. When exactly is that? Take 6000 and subtract 214, and you will find a result of 5786. The Year 5786 – תשפ"ו.

But the length of a “time” is not really the round number 214. It is actually 214.285. That 0.285 is the equivalent of 103 days. On which day did this campaign against Iran begin? On the...
