And they shall judge the people with righteous judgment

Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh | June 20, 2025

The Ohr Hachaim explains this based on another possuk in Tehillim (96:13) יִשְׁפֹּט תֵּבֵּל בְׁצֶדֶק - He shall judge the world in righteousness. The Zohar explains that the Heavenly Beis Din is called צֶדֶק – righteousness.

Chazal tell us that a person’s sustenance is decided on his behalf from the beginning of the year. He will receive exactly as much as was set aside for him by the Heavenly court at the beginning of the year.

If a Dayan on a Beis Din decides the halacha correctly, his decision aligns with that of the Heavenly court and everyone receives that which is due him. The Dayan is exhorted to judge in accordance with the מִשְׁפַּט צֶדֶק that was decided on Rosh Hashana, without perverting the original justice.
