Hilula of the Zera Shimshon

Shabbat Kodesh, Parashat Shoftim, 6th of Elul

Zera Shimshon. Two words that have become, in the Jewish world, a synonym for remedy and salvation, light and hope. The book works wonders. Thousands have found salvation through the author’s promise to those who study it.

With deep and elevated feelings, and with sublime emotions, we now approach the day of the hilula of our holy master, the Divine Kabbalist Rabbi Shimshon Chaim ben Rabbi Nachman Michael Nachmani, of blessed memory, which this year falls on Shabbat Kodesh, Parashat Shoftim, the 6th of Elul.

To the sorrow of every heart, it is not possible to approach or visit his resting place, for the site of his burial has been lost to knowledge over the years. Perhaps this is due to our master’s strong will that people focus instead on the legacy he left for generations: the book Zera Shimshon on the Torah, and Toldot Shimshon on Pirkei Avot. As he pleads and entreats in the introductions to his works, that kindness be done for his spirit and soul — that through the study of his writings his lips continue to move even after his passing — therefore, with Divine Providence, only these works remained for the generations as an eternal memorial.

And from here comes the call to increase the study of his books throughout the year, and especially on Shabbat Kodesh, the day of the hilula, as is known from our holy books: that in this way there is great joy for the soul, and it is considered as if one had prayed at his grave.

The World Organization for the Dissemination of the Torah of Zera Shimshon has the merit of fulfilling his heartfelt will through a wide range of activities throughout the year: publishing his works in renewed and annotated editions, printing beautiful booklets, and distributing tens of thousands of weekly Zera Shimshon leaflets in seven languages. Classes have been established all over the world, as well as a global shiur system, Kol Zera Shimshon. As has been announced, in these days we have intensified the system of dissemination and are preparing majestic events in honor of Rabbeinu: a central uplifting hilula banquet, a special study event “Siftotav Dovevot” at the Zera Shimshon Beit Midrash in Jerusalem, and a grand raffle for tens of thousands of participants who will study the holy book Zera Shimshon for at least 20 minutes.

Zera Shimshon is recognized everywhere as a book of segulá (spiritual merit), a source of salvation. Thousands of students and benefactors who helped increase the number of learners, and who themselves merited salvations, testify as countless witnesses to its greatness and unique power. A wondrous fulfillment of the words of our Sages: “And who can ‘rule’ over Me? The Tzadik. The Tzadik decrees, and the Holy One, blessed be He, fulfills.”

Study of the book has brought showers of blessing and relief: childless women conceived; the sick recovered; thousands quickly found their destined partners; many merited a good livelihood and sustenance; protection; rescue; and countless other salvations. Within the framework of this small booklet it is not possible to contain thousands of stories, each one a world unto itself. Yet it would not be right to leave the reader without anything; in this booklet we have included a small glimpse into the story of the book.

And let it be known: only through the strength of the many who participate in the great expenses of publishing and disseminating the Torah of Zera Shimshon do we have the ability to fulfill the will of the Tzadik. And the great Sages of Israel have already ruled that even the donors, together with the learners, are included in the blessing and salvation. Indeed, we see with our own eyes that donors and supporters merit to witness salvations with doubled strength, and even in wondrous and awe-inspiring ways.

As we stand at the threshold of the day of the hilula, we turn to the public of students: come to our aid, participate with generous and regular donations, and in this way we will be able to continue spreading his Torah and fulfilling his request. Surely, all donors will merit the fulfillment of his great blessings, as he inscribed in the introduction to his book:

“And your eyes shall see sons and sons of sons like olive shoots around your table, wise and understanding, and homes filled with all goodness, wealth and honor that shall not depart from your offspring.” Amen, may it be His will.
