Rav Dovid of Tsharnotshopka

Me'oros Hatzaddikim | December 31, 2025

Rav Dovid was born in Sheps circa 5610/תרי to Rav Tzvi Zev, Av Beis Din of Tavi. He was renowned as a tzaddik, a chassid and a great masmid. He married Chava, the daughter of Rav Aharon, who was a descendant of Rav Chatzkele Kuzhmirer. Though his stature in Torah was lofty, he did not want to accept the position of the rabbinate; however, when an accidental fire consumed all his worldly possessions, he was forced to become the Rav of Badzhanav. He taught Torah there for seven years until he was appointed Av Beis Din in Yelavi, and he served in that role faithfully for some 43 years. He left behind many chiddushim in pilpul and drash, although many were also lost over the years.

He passed away on 5 Elul in the year 5686/תרפו and was laid to rest in Warsaw. He left behind his sons Rav Eliyahu Dov and Rav Chanoch Henich, Av Beis Din of Galin HY”D, and his son-in-law, Rav Avrohom Ephraim Fishel Finkelstein of Warsaw.
