Rebbi Moshe Shapira z"l used to give many, many shiurim each week, and was once asked the reason for running such a full schedule. Rebbi Moshe responded that through teaching others Torah, one receives tremendous siata d'shmaya and clarity, with great new insights and revelations. Another thing: Rebbi Moshe once told magidei shiur (Torah teachers) that as great as it is to "sit" on the words of all the Commentators, it is even so much more important to "sit" on the words of the Gemara itself! When the rebbi uses his own mind in the sugya (in the right way), the talmidim learn how to think themselves as well, and develop a direct and private connection with Hashem Himself.
