Thirty Prerogatives
דברים יז ,טו:
ךֶּלֶּמ
ךיֶּלָּע םיִ שָּ ת םֹו ש
Baal HaTurim remarks that the gematria of this phraseשוֹם תָשִׁים עָלֶׁיךָ (1226) is equal to that of שלשים מעלות (thirty prerogatives) to indicate that kingship is acquired with thirty prerogatives.
The Vilna Gaon lists thirty prerogatives of kingship that are mentioned in Nach and thirty more that are listed in the Mishnah:
Shmuel I, Perek 8, verses 11-17:
- He will reign over the people
- He will take your sons
- He will place them on his chariots
- and in his cavalry
- and run before his chariot
- He will appoint captains of 1000’s
- and captions of 50’s
- and to plow his furrows
- and reap his harvest
- and produce his implements of war
- and the furnishings of his chariot
- He will take your daughters
- as perfumers
- as cooks
- and as bakers
- He will take the best of your fields
- of your vineyards
- of your olive trees
- and he will present them to his servants
- He will take a tenth of your grains
- and of your wines
- and present them to his officers
- and to his servants
- He will take your servants
- and you maid-servants
- and your best young men
- and your donkeys
- and press them into service
- He will take a tenth of your sheep
- and your servants will be his slaves
Mishnah Sanhedrin 2:2-5:
- He cannot be a judge
- He cannot be judged
- He cannot testify
- He cannot be testified against
- He does not do Chalitzah
- Chalitzah is not done with his wife
- He does not do Yibum
- Yibum is not done to his wife
- No one may marry his widow
- He does not leave his palace for a dead relative
- At the mourner’s meal, he sits on a dargash (low seat) and others sit on the floor
- He may wage an optional war with the consent of the Sanhedrin
- No one may stop him from making a path for himself
- His path has no limits
- During war all the plunder is placed before him
- and he takes the first portion
- He does not take too many wives
- nor too many horses
- nor too silver and gold
- He writes a Sefer Torah for himself
- and takes it out to war
- and brings it back
- and it sits with him in judgment
- and it is before him when he reclines
- No one may ride on his horse
- No one may sit on his throne
- No one may use his scepter
- No one can see his haircutting
- No one may see him naked
- No one may see him in the bathhouse
