The halachah is that if one is mitzta’er [uncomfortable] he is exempt from having to eat and sleep in the succah (Orach Chaim 640:14). We don’t find such an exemption by other mitzvos, what is unique about the mitzvah of succah that we find such a thing?
The Madanay Asher suggests a number of answers:
- There is a halachah by succah of תשבו כעין תדורו – “one should dwell in the succah like he would in his house”. One wouldn’t sit in his house if he was uncomfortable, therefore, if one is uncomfortable, he is exempt from succah as well. In other words: There is no special din that mitzta’er is exempt, rather, it’s because of the din of תשבו כעין תדורו.
- The Divrei Yatziv (cited in Shefa Chaim, Succos pg. 268) writes that the succah is a remembrance of the ananei hakavod which: שבאו לישראל לרווחתם ולהנאתם – “Yisroel entered, for space and benefit”, therefore, the mitzvah of succah was only given in a place where one is comfortable to sit in it, just like the ananei hakavod.
- Since this is the first mitzvah Klal Yisroel fulfill after Succos, Chazal made sure that the mitzvah should be easy without any pain involved, and they said that if one is uncomfortable, he is exempt.
- The Kotzker Rebbe explains: The idea of the succah is that one negates his independent existence and places himself completely in Hashem’s hands. However, if one suffers from sitting in the succah, this is an indication that he has not succeeded in nullifying his independent existence. What, then, does he accomplish by remaining in the succah?! (Emes Ve’emunah No. 10)
