If a decoration which has the name of Hashem written on it falls off the succah wall on Shabbos, is one allowed to pick it up?
The halachah is (Orach Chaim 638:2) that if decorations fall down on Shabbos or Yom Tov, they are mukzteh and it is forbidden to move them.
Does this halachah apply if the decoration has the name of Hashem on it, or do we say that one is allowed to pick it up to save the bizoyan [disgrace] of Hashem’s name being on the floor?
The Minchas Shabbos (siman 88) writes: If a mezuzah falls on the floor on Shabbos one is allowed to pick it up, as it’s a bizoyan to Kisvei Kodesh [Holy writings] to leave them on the floor, therefore, presumably the same thing would be in our case.
However, perhaps we can differentiate, as a mezuzah has more kedusha than a decoration? Although there may be room to differentiate, R’ Shamai Gross shlita ruled that it is still ok, in order to save the bizoyan.
Another heter may be: The Mechaber (638) says that if one makes a special stipulation when putting up the decorations then they don’t become muktzeh. Perhaps we can say that when it comes to Kisvei Kodesh (i.e. decorations with Hashem’s name on) we assume automatically that one stipulates that if it falls down, he may pick it up.
