Sukkos Drush 7 – קהלת יעקב
Why do we have the Yom Tov of Sukkos specifically after the days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Hakippurim? Klal Yisroel beseech Hakodosh Boruch Hu on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Hakippurim to give them life. They ask for life so that they can praise Hakodosh Boruch Hu. If they are dead, they cannot praise Him, as it says "לא המתים יהללו י-ה". Klal Yisroel say that if Hakodosh Boruch Hu gives them life, from today on, they will praise Hakodosh Boruch Hu. Being that Klal Yisroel accepted upon themselves to praise Hakodosh Boruch Hu, they need to fulfill their word. Now that Rosh Hashanah and Yom Hakippurim passed and Klal Yisroel feel that they were given the gift of life again, they need to fulfill their word of praising Hakodosh Boruch Hu. Thus, we have the Yom Tov of Sukkos after these holy days, so that we can fulfill our word, as this Yom Tov is all about thanking and praising Hakodosh Boruch Hu.
